The challenges that lifers face returning to society after decades of imprisonment are hard to imagine. They are one of the most vulnerable populations in our country and yet they receive very little support as they begin to rebuild their lives.
Those that are lucky enough to transition into The Francisco Homes (TFH) upon release have access to housing, counseling, employment opportunities, yoga classes, and a myriad of other services that promote long-term success outside of the prison walls.
However, lifers are still in danger of being taken advantage of by people on the outside who have written them off for years. When they return to society, they often find that they have been cut out of wills, property, benefits, or salaries, simply because of the length of their sentence.
Without a lawyer, they have no chance of recovering what was stolen from them. This puts them at risk as they try to navigate a changed world.
The TFH Clinic is a distinct reimagining of how to provide indigent legal services to the most vulnerable. By combining cutting edge legal technology, skilled case management, holistic collaboration between service providers, and restorative legal representation, we hope to deliver a range of legal services to lifers to vindicate their rights and set them up for success.
